A number of cities in California have local rent control ordinances that cap rent increase for certain kinds of units. Depending on the date when these ordinances were originally passed they affect units constructed in different years. Additionally, different cities set different allowed rent increases, generally linked to inflation but not always. These ordinances only apply to apartments and do not apply to single family homes, condominiums, Cooperatives, or subsidized housing of any kind.

Use the following list to determine if your building was qualifies for your local rental ordinance. Buildings built prior to the “Effective Date” do not qualify for rental caps. Make sure to check your city’s website as some local rent caps have additional restrictions.
